So I decided to try 2FA and of course I screwed up something. Luckily I’m still logged in on the Memmy app to make a post. Could one the admins please turn off 2FA on my account?

Earlier today I made a comment that someone must have found controversial, because I noticed that all of my posts and most of my comments made in the last month have received about a dozen downvotes each, all happening today. Has anyone experienced anything similar and is there anything that can be done to combat that sort of thing from happening? I think that reddit used to only shadow downvote when voting from a user's profile. I'm assuming Lemmy isn't that advanced yet.

As many of you already know Lemmy has a new version. V 0.18.3 This brings quite a few features, notably :

  • reducing database size by around 80%
  • new logic for determining comment default language (no, this doesn’t remove ‘undetermined’ as the default language but does mention it may be a possibility in the future.)
  • infinite scroll user option (opt-in not enabled by default thankfully.)

Full changelog here. First of all, thanks to the admins for keeping the server up and allowing us to have the awesome experience. Secondly, it would be great to have some updates on when we are upgrading, thanks.

This is an update to my previous post about suspicious inactive accounts on a handful of instances: (https://sh.itjust.works/post/998307).

I ended up messaging the admins at the 16 instances show in the attached image. I pointed out their wild user numbers, and referenced the lemmy.ninja post detailing how that instance scrubbed suspicious accounts from their user database.

6 admins responded. They had all noticed the odd accounts and either thought the numbers were wrong, or weren't sure how to purge the suspicious accounts without nuking their databases. In the end they managed to delete a combined total of about 338k dormant accounts from their instances. (One of the instances seems to have gone down since then.)

I never received a reply from the other 10 instance admins, though 8 of those 10 instances appear to be down (as of 27 July 2023). 2 instances are still up and unchanged.

Between the actively removed accounts and the downed instances, this represents a loss of 930,004 inactive Lemmy accounts!

You can see the drop in the graphs on The Federation. The total number of Lemmy accounts has been cut in half over the past 3 weeks, from a peak of 2.18M to today's 1.09M. The change is mostly from these 16 instances.

I have to admit, I did not expect such a large change when I started this! Hopefully this bodes well for Lemmy's future as a place where actual humans interact, rather than a cesspool of automated comments and upvote/downvote brigading.

That's all I have for now. Keep your stick on the ice; we're all in this together.

I see many posts here about the outage but no statement from the admins about what happened. Anybody know?

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/2012318

Links:

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Edge - v1.2.3 is still being approved, you can grab the release from Github if you are eager
  • Opera: Still under review, please download from Chrome webstore or Github release.

For questions / support: [email protected] (alternate: https://lemmy.ca/c/instance_assistant)

What's new?

(read on the wiki)

  • You can now customize the instance list to match which instances you actually use. This should be helpful for those that have accounts on different instances.
  • Added a settings page so that you can turn off features that you don't want active
  • Added buttons for helpful tools that let you explore Lemmy/Kbin communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com).
  • Added a sidebar for those that prefer it (works on Firefox, Chrome & Opera; Edge doesn't have sidebars yet but the code is there)
  • Fix for issues with the search trigger on the community not found page (thank-you to whqwert!)
  • Various bugfixes, small theme changes, and improved wording

What's coming up?

(read on the wiki)

  • Working with the amazing /u/[email protected] to bring over features from the LemmyTools Userscript^1^
  • Integrating lemmyverse.net and search-lemmy.com so you can do everything right on your community page^2^
  • Adding icons and simplifying the design, as the UI is getting wordy
  • Adding support for alternative home instances (ex. Alexandrite - Issue 14)
  • Ability to have multiple 'home instances', so you can open it in any without having to change your home instance each time.
  • Finishing the setup so that people can contribute translations / other languages to the extension.
  • Getting the extension on Opera (no immediate plans, but this would be good to have)

More details:

  1. /u/[email protected] has created a really useful userscript that you can find here: https://thesimplecorner.org/c/lemmytools. We're going to be working together to bring those features into Instance Assistant, so that you can have all the features in one place.

  2. Right now there are buttons to explore Lemmy/Kbin communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com). Both of these take you to the respective webpages. Instead, it might be nicer to have a lightweight version right on the Lemmy/Kbin community page (or in the extension popup/sidebar). This should be possible using their APIs/data access, and I have a little working proof of concept already (see GitHub)

I'm new, what is this?

Instance Assistant is a browser extension that started out as a way to quickly jump from one community to the version on your home instance, so that you could subscribe/participate immediately. Since then, a few other features have been implemented:

Features

  • Redirect to your home instance:
    • Buttons will be added to the sidebar of any Lemmy or Kbin community you visit, which will let you open the same community on your home instance.
  • Open links in home instance:
    • Right click context menu will allow you to open any links in your home instance
  • Improved Error Pages:
    • 'Community not found' pages now have better information, a button to trigger a fetch, a button to open a community in the source instance, and more.
  • Customizable popup & sidebar menus:
    • Customizable list of instances to let you quickly switch home instances. This is great for if you have multiple accounts on different instances.
    • There are also buttons for helpful tools that let you search for communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com).
  • Settings:
    • You can change the default behaviour of the extension, customize the popup & sidebar menus, and turn off features you don't want to use.

Hi,

I don't know if this is an issue with sh.itjust.works or with Lemmy more broadly.

When I click on comments for a specific post and then on the back arrow to go back to the main page, I am sent back to the first page (i.e. the one that appeared when I first opened the website). Hence, I have the impression to turn in circles, always going back to the same posts, plus the fee that were posted while I was on the comment thread.

Same thing happens when I click on a post that brings me to a third party site (YouTube, imgur,...). This is kind of annoying.

Is there a way to close the comment section/third party website and go back to the place I was at when I clicked on the link, as opposed to the beginning of new ?

Also, is it just me or are other users experiencing the same issue?

I am using a Firefox shortcut with an android phone.

Anyone else noticing their profile always shows their most recent posts/comments etc as if it's right before the server downtime?

Reloading the page seems to show my new content, but I have to do that each time.

Apologies if its just me. I think it might be but thought I'd ask the community before going off on a troubleshooting spree

I'm talking like communities exclusive to an instance where only instance members can participate in. This would be great for communities like The Agora.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this. I can't login using my normal user at sh.itjust.works. Browsing to it seems to be broke as well.

Going to post this here. Assuming their server doesn't have to work to post this to the federated section on this server...

I know the .ml s are having issues because of the government taking over the .ml domain. But what is going on with sh.itjust.works?

I want to report a bot/troll here for you to purge him. He’s messaged a gif of a woman shitting to me. No doubt he’s done this to others too.

His handle is kungfu @sh.itjust.works

I hope you purge the troll, and ideally block his ip if that's possible.

I'm using Jerboa v0.0.40 and I can upload images just fine in any community from any other servers, but it doesn't work with communities hosted on sh.itjust.works. Error I get it "Value of type java.lang.string cannot...." I can't see the end of the message.

Reddit has decided to run another edition of r/place in mid July for some unimaginable reason.

https://sh.itjust.works/post/1387534

It seems to me that it would be stupid to not at least attempt to advertise for Lemmy given the perfect opportunity. Many have expressed concerns about giving reddit more traffic, but a few thousand users is less than a rounding error to reddit. However, getting a few thousand more redditors to move to Lemmy would be great for us.

Hopefully I can get a few sh.itheads to help in this noble endeavor. If not, at least I tried.

Today as I was searching for interesting communities to join I suddenly became saddened as I remembered this app that I spent hours using. StumbleUpon. When it was young it was the app I spent the most time on waiting between classes. just finding something interesting was always worth it.

The app is not what it used to be. I went to stumbleupon.com just to see and its all corporate. I'm sad because I kinda want StumbleUpon for the fediverse. Maybe I don't want to search for hours looking for communities to join, mastodon users to follow, or pixelfed instances that may have great photos. Maybe I want StumbleUpon for the Fediverse. I could connect it with any federated account, stumble upon something interesting, and subscribe. How could we go about building that?

What are your thoughts?

Well Lemmy has officially gone big time.

The Reddit trolls have arrived en force!

121

If I post nsfw onto a community hosted on lemmynsfw, for example, from the sh.itjust.works account, would that breaking the no pron rule, or not necessarily, since it's posted on a different instance?

122

I'd read that the Hot feed degrades over time while a server is running, and this is responsible for users being shown several month or year old posts when browsing by hot. Some instances like lemmy.world get around this by restarting the server several times a day.

I was just curious about how often sh.itjust.works is restarted, since I've been seeing a high amount of old posts on hot recently.
