I really want to get one as the quality is great, but I heard they don't last forever and eventually break. I could also go for a CZUR, but the results you get out of them are only so/so. Don't want to get into building something on my own. Need something that doesn't destroy books.

Budget is about $500.

I have a few devices all connected via WiFi near each other. I host dhcpd on machine to transfer large files between so I don't bog down the wifi. Any device that gets a lease uses the DNS address handed to it from dhcpd instead of the DNS from the wireless. I know this is a DNS issue (resolvconf specifically & systemd) does anyone here have a similar setup or know how to help with this?

My Seagate HDD just broke and am looking for a replacement that is at least 2tb but am unsure about what brand I should get and if the ones I found on amazon are any good. Can anyone tell me if the ones I've found are bad and if so what you recommend?

As the title says, that's what I'm concluding would be the best choice after my older WD, 1.5 TB, usb HDD external drive faulted out last night. I used to know all this stuff when I was back in tech year's ago, but now I have to research to know all the latest, greatest options that are dependable, current, and affordable. In my short search this afternoon, this is what I've concluded. Any other recommendations? I'm expecting this will cost about $200.

Hello everyone,

I would like to build myself a NAS in RAID1 but currently I cannot afford it. I would like to buy the various parts slowly and came across this 12TB Seagate Enterprise Capacity v7 ST12000NM0127 for 144.99€. The description says "refurbished" but most reviews say they received a device still in its original packaging and with zero hours of operation. How is this possible? Is there a hidden scam?

I don't think I've ever seen a 12TB hard drive at such a low price. If it is not scam, do you recommend that I purchase it?

Thank you very much.

Hey guys, I have been using a cheap sata to usb adapter (with external power too) for some hard drives. But I have found that 3 hard drives have got reallocated sector's since using it. Is it the adapters fault or just bad luck?

I have several movies and TV shows on my Disks, around 3 TBs worth. Some just sit in storage for years until I impulsively want to watch them IMMEDIATELY, or some i like to rewatch every few motnhs/years.

I'd like to compress and store them since i can just extract and watch when i need to . The goal is saving space and maintaining quality.

Eg: I have FRIENDS tv show 200 episodes 70 GB, if i compress the main folder, could i keep it stored as something =~ 50- 60 GB or compress my entire movie folders of 300 GB-500 GB each ? Will that save space? If yes, what compression methods should i use?

Hi all. I have about 2tb of family photos, videos and drone footage that I am really worried about losing. Especially with people talking about bitrot etc. I already have 2 backups at home, along with a cloud backup, and was looking at buying either an HDD or SSD to make a copy and keep at a friend's house. But reading into this, that seems like a bad idea, and going for the M-Disc route seems to be the best option due to the longevity of the archive. I have seen that there are BDXL discs at 100gb each, so was thinking of buying a compatible burner along with a spindle of BDXL discs and burning / engraving them and sending these to my friend instead. Does that sound like a good idea? If so can anyone recommend a Windows compatible burner, preferably internal?? Thanks.

Hi,

I use Macrium Reflect (v7) to image quite a few drives, including a drive which holds confidential information (including emails). I have encryption enabled on the .mrimg files.

I back up most of the differentials and incrementals to BackBlaze, but I have always avoided doing this with the images of the "confidential drive".

The reason I exclude that drive is because I have always wondered whether it is theoretically possible to extract a file from a differential or incremental backup (without having access to the full).

It would seem likely that it was theoretically possible to extract a new file from just Inc(2) if the file was added after Inc(1) but before Inc(2), because Inc(2) should contain all of the blocks which make up the file. It would seem less likely for files created before Inc(1), even if it was modified between Inc(1) and Inc(2), because some of the blocks that make up the current file would only be in Inc(1) and some would only be in Inc(2).

Just wondered if anybody had any deeper knowledge of how Macrium images, and any thoughts on whether this is anything like a real risk.

Any though would be much appreciated.

Sent a hard drive to DriveSavers due to some clicking (though we didn't hear scratching). Unfortunately everything was lost. But I don't understand how lower/bottom platters can't be recovered at all if only the top platter is physically damaged.

"This hard drive has suffered severe media damage in what is known as a "head crash." This is a mechanical malfunction that causes the read/write heads to make physical contact with the surface of the disks inside the drive, causing abrasive damage to the magnetic coating that stores the data. Our engineers worked on the drive in our ISO Class 5 cleanroom, but because of the severity of the damage in this case, no data was recoverable"

On the call they mentioned something like Sector 5 0 (five zero) was the most severely damaged and contained the most data. They also said less than 1% of data could be read, I guess that's another way of saying nothing could be read.

16 year old drive. Previous posts about it post 1 and post 2. I'm super regretful that I didn't give my sister clearer instructions to copy as much as possible in one go. Back up your data guys. :'(

My current tower is full and I am in the process of upgrading all drives to larger sizes. In that process I know have 10 or so 8TB drives just sitting in a pile doing nothing. One of my SAS HBA cards has a Mini-SAS external that I can convert to 4 SATA drives.

I am looking for something (internal that can be external or straight external) to hook up 4 drives too, since again, they are just sitting doing nothing. Ideally whatever solution I use would have power or if it's an "internal" case maybe some helpful instruction on how to power it. Fans as well.

I am struggling to find Mini-SAS to SATA external or Mini-SAS to Mini-SAS enclosures and if their is one thing I don't fully understand still its how the SAS HBA cards work so I want to make sure I get the right thing. Currently everything I am running is internal to my tower I built, so the external stuff is new to me.

Or, do they make Mini-SAS to single ESATA? Then I could use a Mediasonic external case too.

Let's assume I want to backup my data on NSA data centers

Let's *assume* they don't have the knowledge/power to break every cipher/encryption, so I use one that is yet to decode

Let's assume I have terabytes of data to backup/synchronise and I have a connection that is speed capped and metered, so I need to sent least data possible (no duplicate whatsoever, only delta)

I need kind of solution that will only synchronise new modifications (it can either keep history of modification or not, it's a pimp), to avoid unnecessary data transfer

It needs to be able to recognize what data it needs to send and send it quite rapidly. So it should not re analyze all the data to figure out, nor rebuild all the structure each time it needs to modify something

Let's assume compression time is not a problem, so if any kind of compression need to happen at any step, it's okay, even benefical if it saves space or bandwidth

The real thing is that it's against NSA and it should not figure out the data at all. So what solution would permit to send and store the data encrypted, the data should not be intercepted plain

(Could have been shorter but I have the prodigy to stay cryptic in my explanations while being plentiful at the same time)

I love DA, but I've seen some artists losing their accounts. I'd like to save some of them, but some artists have galleries with +100 pictures and I don't want to open and save each picture.

is there any way to save the whole gallery easily?

Hello,

my gf really wants to watch this old local movie, the problem is, that Ive only found it on NitroFlare. The movie is 2.12GB and you need a premium account for anything above 1GB. Is anyone out there with NitroFlare premium willing to download this movie and upload it to any free service, like MEGA for example.

Thanks

After much research I’m considering setting up my home server/ NAS using an old MacBook I have lying around. This would effectively just cost me $150ish for a 4 or 5 bay from terramaster or Orico on Amazon in addition to the HDDs. This might be the most cost effective option for my purposes, but I wanted to double check a few things with you all before moving forward.

  1. I like the idea of using a DAS rather than NAS because I can directly work off of it for adobe lightroom photo editing a lot easier than a NAS remotely. Would I have any trouble working on this via the network rather than plugged in?
  2. What software do I need for my MacBook? From what I read, the disk utility has raid capability and I can set up raid 1 there. My purposes are mainly to have a Time Machine backup and store photos on this device. Is raid 1 my best option?
  3. In order to keep my MacBook running at all times even when closed, do I have to download caffeine or another app to keep it on?
  4. The MacBook I want to use doesn’t have an Ethernet port nor a thunderbolt port. What’s my best option for connecting both the Ethernet and the DAS?
  5. One I make the MacBook accessible via the network, I know it’s easy to connect my other laptops, but what about phones? How do I connect them for easy backups?
  6. If a drive is getting corrupt in this raid configuration, how would I be notified? Does the software tell me this?
  7. People have said you can back up any amount of data via backblaze for $7 per month. Is this still the case? I currently use one drive but I might switch over if that’s true.

Thanks for helping me out!

I'm just getting into "data hoarding" and interested in storing movies, games and pictures for a long time.

Looking around I found an external drive, but not sure if it's the right device for the job. Please excuse my ignorance on the topic.

The drive in question is a: A-DATA HD680 2TB, here are the specs:

  • Hard Drive Rotational Speed: ‎5400 RPM
  • Hard Drive Interface: ‎eSATA
  • Hard Drive: ‎2 TB Mechanical Hard Disk
  • More details:

I live in a third world country where we get old hardware just in case this drive seems a little old. Amazon recommendations are welcome though!

Any tips on what I should be looking for when purchasing an external drive for storing data for a long time is greatly appreciated!

I have a 18tb Seagate Exos data drive that failed today. Seagate setup a RMA but it could take a month to get the replacment drive.

I currently have two levels of parity in Snapraid and have come up with a couple options to recover the bad drive.

  • Option A: Remove the bad hard drive from my Snapraid.conf and when the replacment drive arrives, add it back to my Snapraid.conf then run "Snapraid fix" to recover the data. (not sure if this would trigger a full-resync which I would like to avoid if possible (as this array is 70TB)
  • Option B: Use my second parity drive (which is the same capacity as failed HDD) to replace the failed data drive, then when the replacment arrives assign the new drive to become Parity-2.

Which option makes most sense? I would like to keep my array up and running while waiting for the replacement HDD to arrive.

So i have been looking replacement for Marcium Reflect and there seems to be none (free ones).

I'm filling to give acronis a chance (cause i can get it cheaper), but my need is:

I backup my main pc as an imgage to my NAS. In Marcium i can open the Image and browse the content. Then choose what i want to "rescue".

I really do not need the clone-clone feature, even if my drive fails i wont be moving everything to the replacement drive. Just few hand picked files.

Q: Can the Acronis Protect Home support this?
