Charlie Brown sits in an armchair reading. He says,"Hey, Patty, bring me a glass of water!"

Patty walks up to him and says,"Say, 'Please'.." He asks,"'Please' what?"

She replies,"Please bring me a glass of water"

She frowns as he smiles and says,"I asked you first!"

Charlie Brown is standing talking to Patty as she sits on the curb. He asks,"You know what I'd like to be?"

He exclaims,"A roughneck!

He shakes his fist, looks at the reader, and continues,"Yes, sir! A regular lil ol' roughneck!"

He sits next to her and concludes,"The only trouble is I'm not strong enough!"

Shermy sits behind Patty in class. He says,"I didn't do my homework..."

He rests his face on his hand and continues,"If the teacher calls on me, I'm sunk! Why doesn't the bell ring?!"

He continues,"It looks like Patty's my only hope..."

He leans forward and whispers to her,"Psst..Patty! See if you can start a filibuster..."

He runs along to throw it down the lane.

The ball klunks on the bowling lane.

As the ball sits unmoving on the lane, Shermy exclaims,"Rats! I never get any distance!!"

The first time the famous invective "Rats!" appears in the strip, while Shermy is seen in alone for the first time
